The Face of Jesus

When a firefly blinks on and off on a warm summer evening, what is that light? When the moon shines in the night sky, what is that light? And when a flashlight beam brightens the path ahead, what is that light? the firefly uses a chemical reaction to manufacture its glow. The moon reflects the rays of the sun. And the flashlight's power comes from electrical energy stored in a battery. All three sources of light are different, yet all three illuminate the darkness. But what is light?

Even though it is all around us, light is among the most difficult of all things to understand. Scientists spend lifetimes studying the properties of light, trying to understand what it is and how it works. At this point we have only theories, but the fact that we don’t understand light doesn’t keep us from using it.

What do we know about light? We know that it travels at a speed of 186,000 miles a second. That’s fast-faster than a speeding bullet! The velocity of the swiftest rifle bullet is only about a mile per second.

Also we know that light consist of many colors. Sir Isaac Newton confirmed that in 1666 when he projected sunlight though a glass prism and saw the rainbow that resulted.

And we know that light travels in waves. But the waves are so tiny that even the longest ones pulsate a trillion times in an inch, and the shortest ones pulsate almost two trillion times in an inch.

It is difficult to understand completely something as complex as light. Isn’t it great that we don’t have to understand it to use it? We can use it without knowing anything about what cause it. Every time we look at something we are using light, because the light rays bouncing around in our environment interact with our eyes to send messages to our brain and allow us to see.

A blind man once went to Jesus to be healed. He had lived in total darkness all his life. When Jesus touched his eyes, the man could see. And what did he see? The face of Jesus, the Light of the world.

A Word from Our Creator:

For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus.

2 Corinthians 4:6.
